Are ADHD Drugs Addictive?

Education

Absolutely, says Bob Gottfried PhD (the clinical director of ACEclinics).  ADHD drugs – like Adderall, Ritalin, and Concerta can be very addictive. In Fact, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) actually classifies Ritalin and Adderall as class 2 controlled substance, on par with cocaine and morphine, for this very reason.

Types: Class II (Schedule II Controlled Substance)

  1. High abuse potential
  2. Severe dependence liability

Examples:

Morphine

Codeine

Hydromorphone

Cocaine

Amphetamines (e.g.   Adderall)

Methyphenidate (e.g  Ritalin, Concerta)

Secobarbital

Oxycodone (Percocet)

ADHD drugs can also cause many side effects. From lack of apetite and inability to sleep, to hallucinations, stroke and heart attacks. What is the alternative to these drugs? Neuro-cognitive training.  This type of training is the only approach that can help in retraining the brain to overcome the deficiencies that are at the root of  ADD/ADHD and LD (learning disabilities).
